Hi Oxbow Archaeologists,
We made it out to the site yesterday afternoon and evening. John O., Brigitte,
Marianne, and I managed to excavate four units before it got dark at 7 P.M. (see
map in photo gallery below). The picture of the excavation (Excavation in photo
gallery) shows John, Marianne, and
Brigitte screening as it was getting dark.
506R497. I finished this unit that I had begun on Saturday (the plow scars were
all that remained) and only found some brick, flat glass, nails, and F.C.R.
505R497. I excavated this unit in the afternoon. Like 505R496 this unit was
lower density – the only diagnostic earthenware was a fragment of Polychrome
Handpainted (see 505R497 Artifacts in the photo gallery).
507R498. I excavated this unit in the afternoon. Diagnostic material included
Old Blue Transfer and Polychrome Handpainted and half of a large (ca. 2 cm) bone
button (see 507R498 Artifacts in the photo gallery).
506R498. John, Marianne, Brigitte and I excavated this unit. Diagnostic
artifacts included a sherd of redware, Blue Transfer earthenware and a blue
facetted glass bead (see 506R498 Artifacts in the photo gallery).
505R498. John, Marianne, Brigitte and I excavated this unit. We got most of this
unit done before dark though the plow scars still remain. This unit was lower
density and no decorated earthenware was recovered.
On Saturday we’ll dig if we can though the weather report right now looks like
it might rain. If it’s bad weather we’ll work in the RB washing etc. The time
changes this Sunday, so next Wednesday we’ll be starting lab work in the RB.
Hope to see you at the site.
Scott
