Hi Oxbow Archaeologists,

We made it out to the site on Wednesday (Oct. 27) and Saturday (Oct. 30). See Map - October 30, 2004 for the location of the units that were excavated.

On Wednesday, John O., Brigitte, and I excavated unit 524R500. The feature we have been exposing completely covers the floor of this unit.

On Saturday, Dave, John, Conrad, and I showed up at the site.

524R499 – John, Conrad, and I excavated this unit. The feature completely covers the floor of this unit. The usual types of material were recovered. Decorated earthenware included Blue and Red Transfer, Blue Edge, and Handpainted. There was also a ribbed/fluted pipe bowl fragment (see Photo 1).

524R498 – Conrad and I excavated this unit. The feature also completely covers the floor of this unit. Decorated earthenware included Red Transfer, Blue Edge and Handpainted. There was also another Clews Backmark on Brown Transfer and another ribbed/fluted pipe fragment (see Photo 2 and Photo 3).

The feature we are currently exposing was originally identified in test unit 525R500 in 2002. It was labeled Feature 3 at that time. So far we’ve identified a south and an east edge. The feature extends into unexcavated units to the west and north. It is more than 3 meters east-west and more than 3 meters north-south!

Plans for this week – I won’t be able to make it to CNC this Wednesday (Dan needs me in Ann Arbor). However, John is planning on being at the RB so there will be lab work Wednesday evening. There is plenty of washing and sorting to do. Next Saturday, we’ll plan on excavating at the site. Right now they’re not calling for rain and it might be partly cloudy. I’d like to excavate the next two weekends if possible!
