Hi Oxbow Archaeologists,

John, Marianne, Dave, Nik, and I made it out to the site. It was a cool and windy day, but we managed to get quiet a bit done.

In the morning we opened to two new units, 3S-108W and 4S-108W, on the east side of the 110 west block. We took these two units and unit 2S-108W (opened last week) down to 25 cm. John found a cordmarked rimsherd – probably early Late Woodland – in 2S-108W at 15-20 cm (see Photo 1). We also found to endscrapers, both made of Bayport chert, in 2S-108, 25-30 cm and 3S-108W, 20-25 cm (see Photo 2 and Photo 3). There was quiet a bit of bone including deer, a possible bear phalanx (burned), fish verterbra, turtle shell, and a few mollusc shells. At the end of the day, I began trowelling the 25-30 cm level of 2S-108W and was finding numerous flakes and bone fragments. Next week, we’ll probably trowel the 25-30 cm level of these three units and maybe open new units to the north. We seem to be coming down on a nice little Late Woodland occupation!!

On Wednesday we’ll do lab work – washing 1/8” screen bags if it’s warm enough.

Next Saturday, we’ll plan on excavating at 20MD263.

Hope to see you at the site.

Scott
