Hi Oxbow Archaeologists,

We went into the field yesterday and closed 20MD263 for the season. John, Marianne, Dave, Nik, Kevin, Conrad and I made it out. We found a tree blown down by the high winds last week near the excavation (see the tree in the foreground of 20MD263 11-12-05 A.jpb). We finished excavating unit 0S-108W to 30 cm. In the morning we all worked on the upper levels. In the afternoon, John and Nik trowelled the 25-30 cm level. We found numerous flakes and bone fragments and some grit-tempered pottery – no diagnostic artifacts yesterday. We also closed the 110 west block for the season – black plastic with dirt heaped along the walls and a few inches on the floor (see 20MD263 11-12-05 C and D). I left the site about 2:30 yesterday. When I got back to the RB I finished washing the 1/8” screen bags and sorted one of them. I found several walnut shell fragments in the sample!

We’ll be working in the Resource Building on Wednesdays and Saturdays till spring. We have plenty of material to wash and sort this winter!

This Wednesday, is the Oxbow Christmas party at 6:00 P.M. in CNC’s Visitor Center. Next Saturday we’ll start the lab work.

I’ll send occasional updates this winter as we find things. Hope to see you in the lab!

Scott
