Hi Oxbow Archaeologists,

We met yesterday. Nik and I sorted 1/8” screen bags in the morning.

In the afternoon, I went over to Sias East and finished excavating the 25-30 cm level of unit 4S-107W that I began last week but did not have time to finish (see Map). I recovered several flakes and bone fragments (including fish vertebra and a turtle shell fragment) as well as a utilized flake used as an endscraper on the distal end and a spokeshave along one lateral edge (see Photo 1).

I have also attached also attached a picture of a “gouge” that Curt found while backfilling at the Naugle site a couple weeks ago (see Photo 2). There are actually several of these from the Naugle site.

Yesterday was the last field day for the season. We will now be working in the Resource Building till next spring. I’ll send out occasional emails updating events and as we find interesting items sorting.  We have lined up the 2008 Oxbow Lecture series: 1) January 23 – Michael Nassaney on Fort St. Joseph; 2) February 27 – Jeff Sommer on his excavations at a Late Prehistoric site in the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge; and 3) March 19 – I will report on our excavations at Sias East and Naugle.

We’ve tentatively scheduled the Christmas party for Wednesday, December 19 – more on that later.

This Wednesday we will not be meeting. We will start our winter lab work next Saturday at the Resource Building.

Hope to see you Saturday.

Scott
