20MD534 TRADE SILVER

Numerous fragments of trade silver ornaments have been recovered from site 20MD534.  In large part these are identical to those recovered from the nearby Cater site.  The most common trade silver item from the site are "earbob" fragments.  The cones, balls, and fragments of wire as well as small triangular silver pieces sometimes attached to the earbobs have been recovered (for an example from the Cater site see Trade Silver from the Cater site includes small fragments of broaches).

Other trade silver objects include fragments of ring broaches and scrapes of silver.  The picture below shows two crushed ring broaches on the top left.  Some of the trade silver appears to have been modified by the Chippewa living at the site.  The rolled tube in the top row center and the piece on the top right that appears to have been tacked down and a heart cut out of it, are two examples.

Two small trade silver crosses were also recovered from the site.  This variety of trade silver artifact was not found at the Cater site.
