Hi Oxbow Archaeologists,
We made it out to the site on Saturday and had a nice day excavating. Nik,
Kevin, Greg, Diana, and I made it out (see Map).
In the morning we worked on the trench testing the east boundary of the 110 West
Block. We finished the 20-25 cm level of unit 1S-102W and excavated 0-25 cm in
unit 1S-103W. We only found flakes, bone fragments and F.C.R. During the morning
we saw an eagle flying up and down the river a couple times.
In the afternoon, Greg, Diana, and I excavated the 30-35 cm levels of units
2S-107W, 2S-108W, and 3S-107W. Only flakes and bone fragments were recovered. We
noted to areas of burned sediment – one along the east wall of unit 2S-107W and
the other in the southwest corner of unit 3S-107W. I finished the afternoon by
excavating the 0-20 cm level of unit 1S-104W and only found flakes and a few
bone fragments.
Last Wednesday with the assistance of Chris, Phil, and Dennis – we narrowed down
where the Naugle site datum point is likely to be. This Wednesday afternoon I’ll
try make an effort to actually locate it – it is probably about 50 feet north of
the wigwam (I’ve attached a photo of the wigwam – looking west-southwest – see
Naugle Site - June 6, 2007).
This Wednesday I think we’ll probably start to do flotation samples and wash
1/8” screen bags. Next Saturday we’ll plan on excavating at Sias East.
Hope to see you at the site.
Scott
