Hi Oxbow Archaeologists,

We made it out to the Naugle site yesterday. Marianne, Nik, Becky, Kevin, Diane Walker (1st visit), and Cara Lutey (1st visit) came out (see photo below). We excavated in seven units 15S-30E, 13S-37E, 13S-38E, 13S-39E, 14S-37E, 14S-38E, and 14S-39E. The plow zone of these units is about 25-27 cm thick and contains fire cracked rock, a few flakes and grit tempered pottery. The last units we excavated yesterday (13S-37E and 14S-37E) seemed to have a few “larger” (ca. 2 cm diameter) of cordmarked and fabric impressed pottery. Almost all of the chert is Bayport though I saw at least one flake of Flint Ridge chert (south central Ohio source). We excavated two of the units to 40 cm. The soil at the base of the plow zone seems to be the bottom (transition) between a B and C horizon – at 40 cm we were into a light yellowish brown sand (C horizon). This area seems to be deflated – most likely sand has blown up onto the low ridge north of where we are digging. There is a lot of rodent disturbance and burned roots below the plow zone. We found very little cultural material in the levels below the plow zone (about one flake or fire cracked rock per unit).

This week on Wednesday we will be excavating at Sias East. Next Saturday we’ll plan on excavating at Naugle.

Hope to see you at the site.

Scott
