Hi Oxbow Archaeologists,
We made it out to the site three days last week (see pontonmap 7-12-03.pdf)!
On Wednesday (7-9-03), John O. and I excavated unit 511R499. Decorated
earthenware from this unit included Old Blue, Red and Green Transfer and
Handpainted. A fragment of a ribbed/fluted white clay pipe bowl was also
recovered (see 511R499artifacts.jpg).
On Friday (7-11-03), John O., Dennis and Kyle took Steve Matthews summer
enrichment class to the site and excavated part of unit 514R490. Artifacts from
this unit included a bottle neck and ribbed/fluted white clay pipe fragment (see
514R490artifacts.jpg).
On Saturday (7-12-03) we excavated 510R499 and 511R500.
510R499 – Kevin, Greg, Lia and I excavated this unit. The feature noted along
the south wall of 510R498 continues along the south wall of this unit.
Earthenware from this unit inclued Old Blue and Red Transfer and Annular, as
well as a stoneware sherd (see 510R499artifacts.jpg).
511R500 – Greg, Lia and I began this unit. Notable artifacts included Old Blue
and Brown Transfer, Redware (see 511R500artifacts.jpg), and a Bayport chert
biface tip (see 511R500bifacefrag.jpg).
Yesterday evening (7-16-03), John O., Marianne, Brigitte, and I washed level and
1/8” screen bags and processed flotation samples.
On Saturday we’ll plan on excavating at the Ponton site – it’s supposed to be
good weather!
Hope to see you at the site.
Scott
