Hi Oxbow Archaeologists,

We had an all day rain yesterday (Saturday, Aug. 28) and weren’t able to make it out to the site. Instead, Marianne, Frances, and I worked in the lab washing artifacts and sorting 1/8” screen and flotation samples.

I sorted five flotation samples from Feature 4 in order to see what kinds of small artifacts were in the samples. There are lots of small artifacts. These included beads (see Photo 1 in the photo gallery below), a 5-hole bone button (see Photo 2), a percussion cap (see Photo 3), several pins and pin fragments (see Photo 4), a few pieces of lead shot (see Photo 5), and a slate writing board fragment (see Photo 6).

This Wednesday we need to have a chapter meeting to start working on next year’s MAS fall workshop (its our turn to host it). We’ll have a planning session at 6:00 P.M. in the archaeology room in the Resource Building. Things we need to discuss:
       1. Archaeology Day, Saturday, October 2, 2004. I agreed to do a talk on the Ponton site and have a gallery display (like we’ve done in past years). I could use help putting together the display and help in Lansing.
        2. The 2005 Fall Workshop. We need to set a date (preferably in October next year) and start thinking about the program. (One idea - I’d like to see about a Oxbow display in the “rotating display” case for Oct. 2005.)
        3. Egyptian Exhibit at Center for the Arts. Dave recently received an email from the Center for the Arts (forwarded to most of the local Oxbow members) – we need to talk about what we want to do.

Next Saturday, we’ll plan on excavating at the site.
