Hi Oxbow Archaeologists,
Dave, Becky, Nick and I made it out to the site on Saturday. In the morning we
excavated units 2S-99W 25-30 cm, 3S-101W 35-40 cm, and 3S-102W, 35-40 cm on the
east side of the 110 West Block. We recovered a few flakes and bone fragments at
these levels.
In the afternoon I excavated the 60-65 cm levels of 1S-112W and 2S-112W and the
65-70 cm level of 1S-112W on the west side of the excavation. At 65 cm the soil
changed from a dark yellowish brown silt to a dark brown silt -- this at the
level we had the first buried A-horizon in our first test unit 20 meters to the
east. There were two Bayport flakes in the 65-70 cm, but it is unclear whether
or not they are at this level as the result of rodent activity (coming from the
Middle Woodland occupation above).
This week we will meet at the Resource Building Wednesday evening to wash 1/8"
screen bags.
Plans for next Saturday are a little uncertain right now. I need to take Dan to
the airport Saturday afternoon and probably won't dig Saturday morning. Next
week I'll be on vacation and I'm not sure of plans for Wednesday yet (we will
dig on Saturday Aug. 15 though). I'll let you know Thursday whether there will
be a lab session on Saturday and about next Wednesday.
Scott
