Hi Oxbow Archaeologists,
I’m sending out a quick update to let you see the feature we exposed this
weekend. Once again I didn’t leave the site till 8 P.M. so I didn’t have time to
photograph artifacts – I’ll try to do that this afternoon/evening.
On Saturday, Dave, Greg, Lia and I excavated at the site (see excavation.jpg).
We excavated the four units shown in red on the map to finish exposing the
feature that we found on August 2 (pontonmap 8-9-03.pdf). The feature turned out
to be rectangular, about 1 meter (NS) by about 2.5 meters (EW) – see feature.jpg.
I took a couple cores from the center of the feature and it appears to be about
30 cm deep below the base of the plow zone (or about 50 cm below the surface).
It’s still unclear what this feature is.
Tonight we’ll do lab work – I’ll be leaving shortly for CNC.
Saturday, we’ll plan on excavating at the site. Probably in the block to the
north to expose more of the feature that is turning up there.
Hope to see you at the site.
Scott
