Hi Oxbow Archaeologists,
We made it out to the Naugle site on Saturday and again on Monday. We had
excellent weather both days.
On Saturday morning, Nik, Marianne, Diane and I finished the 2x10 meter block
that we have been excavating west of the wigwam (see
Photo 1). We excavated units 13S-30E and
14S-30E to finish the block. We only recovered a few flakes and some F.C.R.
Greg and Lia showed up at noon and Diane, Greg, Lia and I opened a new area
closer to the river in order to try to locate the old excavations. We opened
units 1S-18E, 1S-19E, 2S-20E, 2S-21E (see
Photo 2). These units produced a large quantity of flakes and fire cracked
rock. We also recovered a triangular point from 1S-18E (Late Woodland, see
Photo 3) and expedient point (see
Point 4). We only noticed one piece of
grit-tempered pottery.
On Monday, Diane and I excavated the units we opened on Saturday to 40 and 50 cm
below the surface. There is still quiet a few flakes at 50 cm – they appear to
be coming mainly from rodent burrows. We also opened units 1S-20E and 1S-21 E.
Besides flakes and firecracked rock, we found a expedient triangular point (see
Photo 5), a point blade from a notched point (Photo
6), and two endscrapers (see Photo 7 and
Photo 8).
We’ll either be excavating at Naugle or working the Resource Building this
Saturday.
Hope to see you at the site.
Scott
