Hi Oxbow Archaeologists,
After about three months at Naugle, we returned to the Sias East site yesterday.
Becky, Nik, Diane
and I made it out.
We worked on extending the one meter wide trench to the east of the 110 West
Block to find the
eastern edge of the Middle Woodland occupation. We excavated units 1S-100W to 40
cm and 1S-99W
to 25 cm below the surface (see Map). Both these
units are still producing flakes, bone
fragments and the occasional fire-cracked rock and pottery sherd. There was an
area of burned silt in
the northeast corner of unit 1S-100W at 40 cm. Unit 1S-100W also produced a
scraper made from
Bayport chert (see Photo 1) and a relatively
large bodysherd (see Photo 2).
This morning I attended the MAS board meeting and reported that we had a vote in
August in which
we decided to no longer be a chapter of MAS. In 2008 those of you who choose to
continue
membership in the MAS will need to select another chapter on the MAS renewal
form. We will still
have a link on the MAS website and they will have one on ours. We will be
continuing our activities
under the sponsorship CNC. Everyone is still welcome to participate in our
activities and receive our
updates.
This Wednesday we will be at the Resource Building, either washing or sorting
1/8” screen bags. Next
Saturday is our “Archaeology Month” activity. We will be interpreting at the
Naugle site like we did for
Fall Festival. This will be a part of “Be a Tourist in your Town”. We will have
the artifact displays as well
as excavation. I’ll need a couple of you to help in the afternoon. This will be
the last time we excavate
at Naugle this year. After Saturday we will return to Sias East for the rest of
the season.
Hope to see you at the site.
Scott
