At the present time, two dates have been run on samples from the Cater site.
The earliest date was on char scraped from cord-wrapped stick impressions on the rimsherd illustrated below. This rimsherd was found in the 1970's excavations and is on display in CNC's Visitor Center. The date was run in 1999 (Beta-133705). The resulting date was 1000 ± 40 b.p. that calibrates to 1025 cal A.D. (2 sigma age range - 990-1155 cal A.D.). This date was published in Scott G. Beld, "A Preliminary Report on the Cater Site (20MD36), Midland County, Michigan: Early and Mid-Nineteenth Century Occupations in Central Michigan," The Michigan Archaeologist 48 (2002), pages 61-62.

A second date from the Cater site was run on corn cobs from a smudge pit (Feature 8) in 1991. This sample produced a modern , post-1680 A.D, date -- 102 ± 0.6% of modern (Beta-43546). This corn is probably associated with the 1820's Chippewa occupation of the site. This date was published in Scott G. Beld, "A Preliminary Report on the Cater Site (20MD36), Midland County, Michigan: Early and Mid-Nineteenth Century Occupations in Central Michigan," The Michigan Archaeologist 48 (2002), page 13. Corn kernal and cob fragments from the Cater site midden are illustrated in the picture below.
