Wood charcoal excavated from a hearth (white ash zone of Feature 2) in the 110 West Block at the Sias East site produced a C-14 date that calibrates to 1490 A.D. with a 2-sigma age range of 1430-1650 A.D..
Feature 2 was a pit feature (Zone 2/3 - ca. 50 cm deep) with a white ash hearth (Zone 1 - ca. 5-10 cm deep) in the northwest corner. The hearth portion of the feature had fire reddened sand associated with it. The charcoal for the date came from the hearth portion of this feature (see photo below). A bodysherd of Vessel 1 was also recovered from this hearth (see photo below).
Vessel 1 is represented on the site by several rimsherds and bodysherds. The vessel has a plain/smoothed surface treatment with striations from the smoothing tool occasionally visible on the interior and/or exterior surface. Decoration consists of oblique fingernail impressions/incisions across the top of the lip. One bodysherd has an appliqué strip with fingernail impressions. Several sherds of Vessel 1 are illustrated below.
