In 2005 the Oxbow Archaeologists began excavations at the Sias East site (20MD263). This site is located along the Chippewa river on Chippewa Nature Center's grounds. In the 2005 season we opened two test trenches (60 West and 85 West), a 2x2 m unit (46 West), and a 3x5 m block excavation (110 West). These excavations revealed stratified deposits containing cultural material to a depth of 1.5 meters. At the end of the 2005 season we encountered an occupation just below the plow zone that probably dates to the Middle Woodland period (ca. 200 B.C.-600 A.D.) in the 110 West Block. We continued excavations in the 110 West Block in 2006 and 2007.
In the 2008 season we are continuing to investigate the stratigraphy at the site and we are expanding our excavation in the 110 West Block. To see our current weekly updates, follow this link: 2008 SEASON.htm.
