EARTHENWARE

The earthenware from the Ponton site (and the Pomranky collection) is generally consistent with a mid-1830's date.  One sherd of the Mulberry Flow is later and dates to the 1840's or 1850's.  Two other types, "Old" or "Staffordshire" Blue Transfer Printed and Green Edge earthenware, were going out of style in the 1830's.  Red, Purple, Green, and Brown Transfer Print are varieties that were introduced in the late 1820's and occur on archaeological sites through the 1850's.  The Polychrome Handpainted sherds are varieties that are consistent with an 1830's date.  Follow the links below to see examples of the various kinds of earthenware that Art found on the Ponton site.
