FIREARMS

    Several gun parts and other firearm related artifacts that probably relate to the Chippewa occupation were found on the Ponton site by Art.  The artifact illustrated above is a butt plate fragment from a gun.  It possibly comes from a Type D English Pattern Trade Rifle.  This type of rifle was given to Native Americans by the British Indian Department just before and during the War of 1812.  Other artifacts associated with firearms are illustrated in the photo gallery below.
