GUNFLINTS

GUNFLINTS

Over thirty gunflints were found at the Cater site.  Most of these are British blades, though one burned spall and three made of local pebble cherts were also recovered.  British blade gunflints were not produced until the 1780's or 1790's and did not appear in North America until about 1800 or later.  A distinctive characteristic of the Cater site gunflints is that they are heavily used.  Many of them have edge concavities and localized edge battering from use against a firesteel.

This picture shows several gunflints from the Cater site in the top row.  The second row shows percussion caps, probably associated with the settler cabin.
