INFANTRY BUTTON

This pewter U.S. Infantry button was found in the Cater site midden during the 1997 season.  It is the variety that was issued to troops between 1815 and 1821.  The back of the button is inscribed "EAGLE / FACTORY".  This was the backmark of a manufacturer, Armitage, who made buttons for the U.S. military from the 1790's into the 1820's.

This button is associated with the Cater site Chippewa occupation.  We think that this button might have been obtained at the Treaty of Saginaw (1819) or from the Chippewa occupants of our site visiting Fort Saginaw (1822-23).
