MIDDEN

    These pictures show the excavation of the Cater site midden. 

Midden #1 and #2 show the profile (or walls) of a couple of the excavation units.  The midden is the gray layer in the middle of #1 and at the bottom of #2. 

Midden #3 shows Scott Beld removing overburden from the top of the midden. 

Midden #4 shows Conrad Latuszek and Dennis Pilaske excavating in the midden. 

Midden #5 shows John Osborne excavating a feature that was located below the midden. 

 Midden #6 is a view taken looking up the slope of the terrace showing Scott Beld and John Osborne excavating with Jim Woodgate looking on. 

Midden #7 is a view taken looking down the slope of the terrace showing Scott Beld and John Osborne excavating with Jim Woodgate looking on. 

Midden #8 shows Scott Beld drawing profiles of the midden units. 

Plow Scars #1 and #2 show the plow scars that were found below the midden at the bottom of the terrace.  These plow scars were covered by about two and a half feet of sediment.  They dated to the 1840's and contained dish fragments from the settler cabin.
