PREHISTORIC OCCUPATIONS

The Ponton site was the location of various prehistoric occupations in addition to the Chippewa and settler occupations.  The photo gallery below illustrates some of the prehistoric artifacts that Art found surface collecting the site.  Prehistoric material recovered in the Oxbow Archaeologists' excavations indicate that the site was occupied in the Late Archaic (3000-1000 B.C.), Middle Woodland (200 B.C.-600 A.D.), and Late Woodland periods (600-1650 A.D.).
