F08-28 Local Family Kayak Trip
Here's an opportunity to get your kids or grandkids out to enjoy a trip kayaking down the Chippewa River. CNC's Kyle Bagnall and CNC staffer will spend time teaching the basic skills of paddling kayaks and will help everyone navigate down the river. The kayaks used are excellent for beginners and are quite stable and fairly easy to learn how to paddle. Paddling a kayak gives you a totally different perspective on the landscape and the rivers around you. Throughout the trip you'll have a chance to learn how rivers work, discover some of the rarely seen critters of this aquatic environment and learn how to safely avoid common hazards on a river. Group size is kept small so that each paddler will receive good attention and instruction.

Wildlife Walk
A twilight hike in August is likely to net us a variety of nocturnal noisemakers such as katydids and tree crickets, as well as a variety of "bigger game" such as bats, deer, and coyotes. Join CNC Senior Naturalist Janea Little for this guided walk to look for wildlife, and to learn to use our eyes as night goggles.

Full Moon Walk
Native Americans in this area called the full moon of August the "Sturgeon Moon." Unfortunately, local rivers can no longer support this fish species. However, we can still enjoy views of terrestrial wildlife under the full moon, so join CNC Naturalist Janea Little for this guided hike. The hike starts before dark to increase our chances of seeing wildlife that become active at dusk, such as deer, beaver, owls and maybe even a fox. Please wear dark clothing and bring a flashlight, though we'll use our "night eyes" without flashlights if possible.

W08-13 Youth Fly Fishing Workshop
During this workshop, learn the basics of fly fishing and gain a better understanding of aquatic ecology from local experts. John Johnson (FFF certified fly casting instructor, 40+ years of fly fishing experience) and other Trout Unlimited members will provide you with an introduction to fly fishing equipment and flies, demonstrate and provide hands-on fly-casting and in stream techniques and provide you with notes that can be used for later review and practice. Each student will also leave with a box of John's favorite flies! Fishing gear will be provided or you can bring your own so that the instructors can give you input on your equipment. You can bring waders, wear old shorts and shoes or borrow a pair of waders from CNC. Fishing licenses (age dependent) and sunglasses are also required (for sun and eye protection from incoming flies!). Parent or grandparent participation is encouraged (no extra fee). Please bring a lunch.

F08-29 Adventures for Women - Chippewa River Kayak Trip
No waterfalls or rapids to worry about, but in mid-August, there will be plenty of rocks and shallow, sandy bottoms to maneuver around when kayaking the Chippewa River! To help us recover from our efforts, there will be a special (edible) treat awating us when we land at CNC's main canoe launch near the Homestead Farm. Join CNC Senior Naturalist Janea Little for this pleasant float trip from CNC's Chippewa Cabin (near Meridian Road) to just below the confluence of the Pine and Chippewa Rivers. As always with CNC's float trips, the trip might have to be canceled if the weather or water conditions are just too poor.

F08-30 Saginaw Bay by Voyageur Canoe
Join Tom Lenon for an exciting adventure as we paddle in the Saginaw Bay in a 29-foot Voyageur Canoe. The canoe is a fiberglass reproduction of the birchbark canoes used by voyageurs to haul loads of trade goods and valuable animal pelts in the 18th and 19th centuries. During the trip we'll explore the natural and cultural resources of the area and share stories of the past all while having a truly unique outdoor experience. We expect this program to fill up quickly, so sign up right away! If weather or water conditions are not favorable, this trip will be canceled (determined the afternoon of the trip at CNC's discretion) and participants will be refunded.

Short-N-Sweet Bird Hike
Two hours might be just enough time to sort out whether that sparrow was a juvenile Swamp or Song. . . August can be a challenging month for birders, because so many of the birds we'll see will be juveniles, with "not quite right" plumage, and the rest will be post-breeding adults who might or might not be molting half their feathers! Tackle these challenges, along with more straightforward identifications, with Senior Naturalist Janea Little. Loaner binoculars are available.

Early Bird Hike at Wood Duck Pond
The still waters and muddy edges of Wood Duck and Oxbow Ponds should be home to many families of Canada Geese, Mallards, Wood Ducks and shorebirds at this time of year. They are also home to regular sightings of Brown Creepers, Pileated Woodpeckers, and if we step outside of the bird arena, mink and otter! To make sure we have time to walk both areas, meet Senior Naturalist Janea Little at the Visitor Center; we'll carpool to the Homestead Farm and walk to the ponds from there.
