Register at the office to walk 100 miles on Chippewa Nature Center Trails and you will receive a logbook in which to keep track of the dates and mileage you have traveled, and a mi-Vibe pedometer.

To achieve your goal, travel along any of the nature center trails by walking, skiing or snowshoeing. Take in the beautiful views along the Pine and Chippewa Rivers, investigate the fields, forests and wetlands, see how things change throughout the seasons, look for and enjoy the bountiful wildlife and join the many guided hikes throughout the year.

Travel 100, 200 or 500 miles in 2008 and receive a t-shirt to mark your achievement!  Three additional prizes will be awarded to the three people who have logged the most miles.

Exploring Isle Royale National Park: A Presentation
Isle Royale's claim to fame seems to be its wolves, although for most folks who visit this archipelago out in Lake Superior, moose provide a more common thrill. In this program, a former biologist of the Isle Royale Wolf Ecology Study, Phil Stephens, will share his experiences and insights through a slide program that will depict this national park's varied ecosystems, as well as his personal encounters with wolves and moose and an update on the wolves' status. If you've ever visited wonderful northern wilderness, felt the urge to go someday, or perhaps prefer to find out about it without enduring voracious mosquitoes, come on over!

Full Moon Stroll
The moon will be rising as we begin our walk this evening, possibly lighting up a snowy landscape for us to enjoy. If there is enough snow (4 inches or more), we'll use snowshoes -- call ahead to reserve a pair (631-0830) or bring your own -- otherwise, we'll "boot" it. Senior Naturalist Janea Little will lead this walk to look for animal tracks and other signs of CNC's wildlife, and to enjoy the view of the nearly-full moon (technically not full until the wee hours of tomorrow morning).

W08-12 Woodstove Cooking Workshop
Join volunteer Monika Pfannes in a workshop dedicated to woodstove cooking in the kitchen of the log cabin at CNC's Homestead Farm. Participants will learn the art of starting and maintaining a woodstove cooking fire for food preparation, prepare food for 3 meals, cook on top of the woodstove and bake in the oven.

The first meal will be a quick breakfast, followed by a lunch item to be prepared quickly (in approximately 1-2 hours). Then it's time to prepare a full scale supper consisting of meat, vegetable, bread and dessert. Serving of the main meal will take place between 4:30 - 5:00 pm, followed by final cleanup. A spouse or guest of each participant is encouraged to come and share the evening meal (pre-registration of guests required). Class size is limited to 6 adults due to the size of the cabin's kitchen. Join us for this all-day event filled with a lot of fun and good food!

Winter Bird Hike
Winter birding can be challenging if your binoculars fog and your fingers freeze, but it is so worth it to get a view of a Northern Shrike, Rough-legged Hawk or other winter visitor! Join Senior Naturalist Janea Little for part or all of this bird walk. If there is a lot of snow, we'll use CNC's snowshoes (or bring your own); otherwise we'll stick to boots. Loaner binoculars are available.
