Adventures for Women
- Sunset Kayak Trip
The days are definitely shorter
these days, which means we'll be loading
kayaks in the dark at the end of this trip!
The good news is, we'll be on the water for
the sunset (though it will be setting BEHIND
us -- bring a rearview mirror:). Join Senior
Naturalist Janea Little for this peaceful
float trip from CNC's Chippewa Cabin (near
Meridian Road) to our main launch area just
downstream of the Visitor Center. The quiet
water of the Chippewa River is perfect for
either beginners, or for experts who want to
relax. Along the way, we'll watch for herons,
eagles, map turtles, orioles, flycatchers,
muskrat, mink, fish, and other wildlife who
call the river "home." |

The sun is
coming up a little later now, so birders get
to "sleep in" a whole extra hour!
The birds won't wait for long, however, as
many of them will be in the midst of their
migration. Join Senior Naturalist Janea Little
for part of all of this walk to look for these
migrants, as well as resident species. Loaner
binoculars are available.

Bird Walk at
Dow Gardens
For a little
off-site birding, join CNC Senior Naturalist
Janea Little for a morning bird walk at Dow
Gardens (on Eastman Avenue, just south of St.
Andrews). The Gardens have tremendous
diversity, from ponds and floodplain forests
to pine woods and grassy meadows, so the bird
diversity should be equally exciting! Meet at
the Dow Gardens Visitor Center at 8 a.m. Some

Fungi at the
River Point
The River Point
property is an ideal location for an excellent
variety of fungi. Learn to identify some
choice edible mushrooms as well as some deadly
poisonous ones. Lobsters, Honeys and Amanitas
should be fruiting. This longer, but slow hike
will be led by Naturalist Karen Breternitz, so
a bit of forest ecology will be be
covered...she can't help it.

There is a

F08-32 Sunset Kayaking
Beautiful
colors of autumn, migrating birds, and a chill
in the air will be highlights of this trip as
we explore the waters of the Chippewa River
under the light waning autumn sun. Using CNC's
kayaks, this trip will begin at Chippewa
Nature Center and end on the Tittabawassee
River, near Midland's Tridge. If weather or
water conditions are not favorable, this trip
will be canceled (determined the day of the
trip at CNC's discretion) and participants
will be refunded.

F08-33 Big Island Lake
Wilderness Canoe Adventure
The Big Island
Lake Wilderness Area lies in the heart of
Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The area features
23 small lakes, ranging in size from five to
149 acres. The lakes are situated among low,
rolling hills and are connected by canoe
portages.
Our group will
leave CNC in a 15-passenger van at 7:00 am. As
we arrive at the Wilderness Area we'll carry
our gear and canoes to Big Island Lake and
paddle to a backcountry campsite. We'll spend
the next three days exploring northern lakes,
observing wildlife and enjoying the peaceful
pace of the northern autumn forest. On foot,
we'll also look for evidence of old logging
camps, an old homestead and abandoned railroad
grades.
CNC will
provide canoes, paddles, PFDs, a group water
filter and other group gear. Other gear, such
as portage packs, backpacks, dry bags, tents
and sleeping pads are available for loan at no
extra charge (first-come, first-served).
Participants are required to provide all other
gear and their own meals throughout the trip
(including cooking gear and stove).
A required
pre-trip meeting to review gear
recommendations, a preview of photos from the
area and backcountry camping basics will be
held on Monday, September 15, from
6:00-9:00 pm in
the CNC Visitor Center. A suggested gear list
will be mailed to participants at time of
registration.

W08-11 Fungi Workshop
Join us for
this three-day course and lean about
identification, ecology and the importance of
fungi in the ecosystem. Participants will
learn how to identify some edible fungi as
well as avoid poisonous look-alikes. This
course is ideal for beginners, but challenging
enough for advanced students. Part of the day
will be spent in the woods, then we will
return to the classroom to identify what we
found.
Marilynn Smith
has traveled the world studying fungi. She
earned her Masters degree from the University
of Iowa and has done mycology research at the
University of Vermont and the University of
Michigan Biological Station, as well as
several independent research projects.
