The Sweet Return of Spring!
The woods and sugarhouse come to life as we continue the tradition of making maple syrup at CNC!
Kids will love our new crafts and activities in the Visitor
Center!
-
Make a 40-to-1 maple leaf bead necklace
-
Create the "Sugar Maple Log" - a booklet to color, solve word puzzles and learn about trees and
syrup
-
Fold an origami maple seed, which really spins through the air!
Join Dennis Pilaske for the "Maple Music Matinee" in the River Overlook. This program gives people of all ages a chance to sing along to original songs dedicated to this exciting time of year! You can also try a maple seed game, taste fresh maple taffy and see the Homestead Quilters and Midland Woodcarvers at work!
In the auditorium, see the 20-minute video, "A Sweet Tradition: The Love and Labor of Maple Sugaring," featuring Massachusetts families who have produced maple products for generations. Also on stage, catch the "Green Machines" maple puppet play!
At the wigwam, watch the amazing craftsmanship of traditional skills instructor Jim Miller as he uses natural Michigan materials on several spring projects. After that, take a wagon ride to the Sugarhouse to see how we boil sap into pure maple syrup at CNC. There will also be an 1870s sap boiling demonstration, Sugarbush tours and a tree-tapping activity. Don't forget to stop at the Log Cabin and also catch a lesson about trees in our One-Room Schoolhouse!
Also be sure and visit Nature Preschool at the Nature
