Hi Oxbow Archaeologists,

We made it out to the site yesterday. It was a beautiful, warm autumn day and we to expose Feature 3 (see Map - November 6, 2004). John O., Marianne, Frances, Kevin, Dave and I made it out.

524R497. John, Marianne, Frances, Kevin, and Dave excavated this unit (while I backfilled the open test units). Decorated earthenware recovered from this unit included Light Blue, Brown, and Red Transfer, Handpainted, Blue Edge and a possible Clew Backmark (see Photo 1).

524R496. John, Frances, and I excavated this unit. Decorated earthenware included Light Blue, Brown and Red Transfer and Blue Edge (see Photo 2). One of the Light Blue Transfer sherds has part of a printed pattern or maker’s name with “No. 24” below (see Photo 3). We also found a Bayport chert biface tip (see Photo 4), two ribbed/fluted pipe bowl fragments (see Photo 5), and a lip fragment of a clear glass tumbler in this unit (see Photo 6).

525R499. I excavated this unit. Decorated earthenware included Light Blue and Red Transfer, Handpainted, and Green and Blue Edge (see Photo 7). There was also a porcelain fragment – this is one of the first porcelain fragments we’ve found (see Photo 8). Other artifacts included a pressed glass fragment (see Photo 9)and a burned open pontle base and olive glass bottle fragment (see Photo 10). While I was taking notes for this unit at the end of the day, a deer walked up about 8-10 meters from me (see Photo 11).

This Wednesday, we’ll do lab work at the Resource Building. Next Saturday, we’ll try to excavate – the extended forecast looks like it will be dry and cool.

Hope to see you at the site.

Scott
