Hi Oxbow Archaeologists,

We made it out to the site yesterday and had a good day excavating (see Map). Marianne, Nik, Dave, Kevin and I made it out (see Photo 1).

We started the day excavating unit 1N-107W, the last unit in the 107 west rw. This unit produced the usual flakes and bone fragments. The only particularly interesting artifact yesterday came from this unit. Kevin found a bird band (just after Dave left! – see Photo 2). This band dates sometime between 1921 and 1969 when the DNR was the “Department of Conservation.” The CNC naturalists are trying to track down when, where, and what kind of bird was banded.

We also took the units in our drain down another level and recovered a few flakes and bone fragments.

In the afternoon I re-established our grid in the west half of the block and started excavated the 30-35 cm level of unit 2S-111W. There was a fairly high density of flakes and bone fragments.

This week we’ll be at the Resource Building Wednesday evening washing 1/8” screen bags and processing flotation samples. Next Saturday we’ll plan on excavating.

Hope to see you at the site.

Scott
