Hi Oxbow Archaeologists,
This is the update for the last two weeks.
Marianne, Nik, Kevin, Becky and I made it out to the site two weeks ago on
August 9. We excavated the 35-40 cm level of units 1N-98W and 1N-99W (see
Map - August 9, 2008). We recovered some flakes,
bone fragments, pottery and fire-cracked rock in these units.
Last week (August 16), Nik, Becky, Brian, Greg, and I excavated at the site. We
excavated the 35-45 cm levels of units 0S-98W and 0S-99W (see
Map - August 16, 2008). In addition to the usual
flake, bone fragments, GTP and fire-cracked rock, we found a small pottery
concentration in 0S-99W measuring about 20 cm in diameter. The vessel is
probably Middle Woodland with a smooth surface and large exterior punctuates
that raise rather large bosses on the interior (see
Photo 1 and Photo 2). More importantly,
about the three of the rimsherds and several of the bodysherds had charred
material on the interior surface. I scraped this off on Wednesday and there
should be enough to get a C-14 date and have compositional analysis done!
Tomorrow, we’ll try to excavate though they are talking about rain. If it rains,
I’ll be at the Resource Building.
Hope to see you at the site.
Scott
